Interview Question: “What Are Your Strengths and Weaknesses?” And How to Answer

Prepare yourself for your next interview

One of the most common questions you’ll get during an interview when you are applying for a job is: “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”

Some candidates cannot answer this question. And many of them are confused in this short time and can’t come up with anything to say.

So, they keep quiet, and others say something wrong that they should not say. I’ll cover a few processes here; it will help you pass the interview. Let’s get started.

1. Tips

  1. The strengths that we give need to match those included within the job description.
  2. You also need to demonstrate that you are honest about your weaknesses. So, give them weaknesses and be honest about them.

2. How to structure your answer

  1. Give them some strengths that are a match for the job you are applying for. You can download or copy the job description if you want to and give them three or four strengths from that document.
  2. Give them just one weakness and not more than that. And make sure the weakness is not a match for the job you are applying for.
  3. You must give them weaknesses that can be improved and tell them how you are taking steps to improve on your weaknesses.

3. You Should Consider Those Things

When your employer, your interviewer, is asking you, What are your strengths andweaknesses?”

What should be your answer?

Well, for your understanding, I am going to divide this question into two parts. First, I will talk about strengths and then weaknesses.

About strengths

When they ask you about your strengths, it means they are trying to find out about your skills or your abilities.

So, you can tell them many things that they require in the job description for their company. Don’t be nervous; just try to meet their expectations.

And remember, when you tell them your strengths, they will start comparing them with their company. So, try to say something positive that will help add value to the organization.

About weaknesses

Don’t ever say that I have none, or I have never thought about it. Or something like no one has ever asked me that. Don’t say that because it is a lie.

It just shows you are dishonest and also shows your lack of self-awareness. Those are not good answers.

And don’t try to become overconfident. Don’t try to turn it around and put a positive spin on it. Every person has weaknesses. And remember: no one is perfect in this world.

The main thing is not about your personality. If you are sharing something, create a skillset that you can work on.

3.Brilliant examples to help you pass your interview

I am giving you an example — what are your strengths and weaknesses?

So, here’s how you answer: I have some strengths — I am disciplined, a problem solver, a team player, and a loyal employee when I come to your company and add value through my knowledge and my experience soon.

Because I concentrate on the tasks I have to accomplish, and I make sure they are always of a very high standard.

And about weaknesses. Well, I’m more introverted, and sometimes I notice that I’m embarrassed to share my ideas while people are there.

Now see, that’s a good reply if you are an introvert because here’s what’s going through their mind. They think, okay, this person is shy and introverted, and it’s okay. This is not a big problem, and he will develop this day by day.

And he will try to talk to you more and make you comfortable. And about your strengths, everyone likes a good disciple or loyal employee.

Final word

It’s not good to get excited or nervous in your interview. Try to answer enough, and don’t feel like you need to tell them too much. Just sit politely in front of them and talk to them naturally. Thank you for reading.

Have a great day.
